Q & A

Q: What would you do if you were just starting out today as a brand-new freelance writer?

A: Here’s what I would do if I had to start over at square one today:

🔎Research to find profitable niches

🕵🏻Read the content in top niches to see what I think I’d like best/experiment

✏️Pick one and create a few pieces of content in the niche. Self publish it on LinkedIn, Medium, or my own blog

💛Hire a pro in the niche to review them and give me feedback. Make adjustments/improvements

💻Optimize my LinkedIn, IG, and Twitter/X profiles for the service and niche

👩🏻‍💻DIY a two-page service website

📣Plan a social media content strategy for posting 3x per week on LI

📧Subscribe to jobs emails for freelance writers and begin applying to good fits

Make a list of pubs/companies I’d like to write for

📨Pitch pubs in my niche with decent DA that accept submissions to land an official byline or two

📈Connect with/pitch companies I’d like as clients (according to a schedule/certain amount per day). Track results.

👋Join/network in freelance writing/marketing groups on FB, Slack, etc.

💸Set revenue goal targets (annual, monthly, weekly, daily) and track progress

That’s my crash course 🙂.

It’s not the only way but all these steps have been helpful for me over the past decade. Feel free to reply if you have any ?s.

That’s a wrap!

Good luck applying and I’ll see ya next Friday,

Jessica at ATFW
