Q & A From ATFW Subscribers
Subscriber Question: I’m just getting started as a freelance content writer. While I don’t have professional writing experience, I do have deep experience in a few other fields. Do you think I can use that to land freelance writing jobs?
Answer: 9/10 times, you'll need relevant experience when applying for a writing job, but it doesn't always have to be in writing.
Before becoming a freelance writer, I worked in retail sales, B2B sales, and sales leadership. So as I began freelance writing, I was drawn to writing opportunities in those areas. My experience ended up helping me speak the client's language and land gigs.
I ghostwrote ebooks on leadership, blogs on sales tactics, and whitepapers on retail sales trends. While that's not where I ended up focusing, it was a helpful segue.
Long story short, yes! I absolutely think relevant, non-writing experience can help you land freelance writing gigs. However, if you don’t have any samples, I’d also recommend creating 2-3 strong ones you can send along with your pitches/applications.
Have a question about freelance writing? Respond and I’ll answer it in a future email. (You can be anonymous if you’d like.)
That’s a wrap for this week!
Thanks for reading, good luck applying, and I’ll see ya next Friday,
Jessica at ATFW
