Q & A on freelance writing

Q: How do you increase your rates as a freelance writer?

A: Ask 10 freelance writers and you’ll get 10 different answers but here’s my take as an article/blog writer.

Fire up the lead engine!

When I want to increase my rates, I like to focus on ramping up demand for my writing services. A demand increase allows you to negotiate new contracts at your target rates without risking your current client base and income.

But how do you do that?

I never had much demand for my services until I became a specialist in a high-demand niche, connected with other freelance writers, and built my online presence (LinkedIn/website/bylines). So I recommend all those things.

Additionally, to really ramp it up, you can:

  1. Launch a focused content strategy on LinkedIn

  2. Regularly connect with people who fit your ideal client profile on LinkedIn

  3. Apply for good fit opportunities through newsletters like this one

Once you have a few new, stable clients paying your target rates, then talk with existing clients about increases — assuming you’d like to keep working with them and want to bring them into alignment.

Interested in starting a newsletter?

Newsletters are having a moment right now, and for good reason.

They offer a way to build a community that’s not reliant on any platform.

For freelance writers, they can help you connect with clients, industry peers, or a niche audience.

If you’ve been thinking about starting one but aren’t sure which platform to use, I’d highly recommend checking out Beehiv. I’ve found it more user-friendly than several other platforms and appreciate all the features (e.g. polls, the referral program, the nice full landing page, boosts).

I have a paid plan but the built-in monetization features have covered the cost and more every month. Pretty sweet!

If you want to give it a try, you can use my affiliate link to get one month free and 20% off your first three months. I’m also happy to share more about my experience if you have any ?s.

A peek at the Oregon coast…

I went surfing with my son and a friendly seal joined us! The water was colllld but the wetsuits kept us surprisingly warm.

Owning a home with this view is a big dream of mine! It was fun to get a feel for what it’d be like.

That’s a wrap for this week!

Thanks for reading, good luck applying, and I’ll see ya next Friday,

Jessica at ATFW
