Requirements: As always, the theme is a loose prompt. They're looking for pitches for longer pieces: narrative features, compelling investigations, essential profiles, and super-sharp essays. This call for pitches is mostly aimed at journalists, but if you're an expert with a strong idea, they say don't hesitate to reach out. Read MIT's pitch guide.
Rate: Rates range from $1 to $2 per word, depending on the experience level of the writer, the story, and the publication route. Deeply reported features pay more than shorter news pieces.

SFGATE is a go-to online source for all news and entertainment related to the Bay Area and California, with an emphasis on culture, travel, food, politics and sports.
Job: Tessa is always looking for great stories from freelancers about everything from state news and trends to history to a good ‘ol ‘why is that thing that way’ explainer.

28. Good Tape is looking for pitches for its upcoming celebrity in podcasting issue
Good Tape is a new print magazine that captures the conversations happening in the audio industry. It's created by podcasters for podcasters.
Job: They've begun working on their second issue on the theme of celebrity in podcasting. They encourage pitches about celebrities, but also ones that interrogate the issues surrounding wealth, notoriety, and what it means to be “famous” in audio.

29. Campus Dispatch is looking for pitches on policy changes impacting Gen Z
Campus Dispatch explores how Gen Z is uniquely impacted by confusing and ever-changing policies on reproductive, voting, and LGBTQ+ rights.
Job: Natasha is accepting pitches for op-eds or reported stories.
Requirements: PLEASE make sure you check out the column's current stories to get a feel for what they’re looking for before pitching and do not DM her.
You do not have to currently be in college, but they are prioritizing Gen Z writers. They're also mostly focused on U.S. policy issues.

Once you find a good-fit gig, how can you increase your odds of landing it?
Here are a few tips:
Apply ASAP.
Keep your message short, sweet, and to the point.
Follow the client’s directions carefully.
Tell them why you’re a good fit (e.g. experience, past results, etc.)
Show them why you’re a good fit (relevant samples).
Provide the next step.
Here’s an example of a pitch template that won me a gig:
Hey (client’s name),
I saw your call for freelance writers and it sounds like we may be a good fit! I'm a freelance (add the type of writer you are) with (add your years of experience). I write for many other (name their business type) such as (mention similar past clients).
Here are a few samples of my work (add 2-3):

Average Income: 34% of all surveyed writers and 46% of those from the U.S. reported earnings of $5k or more per month.
Charging Methods: The majority of surveyed freelance writers (53%) charge using a fixed-price method.
Hourly Rates: 67% of all surveyed writers and 79% of those from the U.S. charge $51 or more per hour.
Pay-Per-Word (PPW) Rates: The most common PPW ranges were $0.31 to $0.50 in the U.S. and $0.16 to $0.30 for writers worldwide.
Outsourcing: Just 13.6% of surveyed freelance writers reported outsourcing their work. It was most common for those earning $10k or more per month.
