Q & A on freelance writing

Q: Do you have any tips on increasing your annual income as a freelance writer?

A: This sounds so simple but one thing that’s been enormously helpful for me is reverse engineering my annual goals. In other words, I start with the annual goal and then figure out what I need to do each month, week, day, hour, and article to get there.

Not a big fan of running numbers?

Clearly defined micro goals make rate-setting easier because you have a framework that’s aligned with your higher-level target. They can also help you keep tabs on whether existing projects are moving you closer to your annual goal or holding you back.

For example, I track my work on an ongoing basis using a project tracking template like this (also free). If projects are aligned with my annual goal when they’re all said and done, they get highlighted green. If not, they get highlighted red which means they need attention.

ATFW news

After a truly amazing response of over 400 pitches from the freelance writing community, the first articles from this initiative have been commissioned! Stay tuned for new content from fellow freelance writers later this month.

Also, if you submitted a pitch but it wasn’t picked yet, that doesn’t mean it won’t be. We’ll continue to select pitches from the pitch bank in the months to come (there are soo many great ones).

A peek behind the scenes…

This week’s newsletter is coming to you from… Lake Tahoe! A little hazy from the Crozier fire but it’s extremely nice to have a break from 100+ degree weather in Boise.

That’s a wrap!

Thanks for reading, good luck applying, and I’ll see ya next Friday,

Jessica at ATFW
